The BCSPL returns!

bcspl pic for june 6 post.png

With the recent re-start plans announced by the Provincial Government, combined with a recent meeting of the BCSPL Committee mostly made up of its member clubs, the BCSPL has agreed to play a two week exhibition schedule in preparation for a full fall “back to normal” schedule with all clubs participating.

The clubs and league office are currently building a two weekend exhibition schedule for the June 19/20 and 26/27 weekends. Due to the PHO restrictions expected to be in place at that time, this will be for lower mainland clubs only.

Full league play, with all 12 member clubs including the new 2009 born intake teams, will start on the September 11/12 weekend assuming the 4th step in the re-start plan does in fact come to fruition on September 7th. There will be no BCSPL League Cup for 2021, and instead, all clubs will play more games than normal during cup play, and will continue playing through the December 4/5 weekend. This will provide more games, extra development time, and value for all players who have missed a substantial amount of development time on the field.

The schedule for the two June weekends will be posted on June 11.

2021 BCSPL SPRING SEASON UPDATE

maxresdefault.jpg

During this very difficult time for all involved in youth sports, the BCSPL and its Clubs are actively working behind the scenes to plan for a spring season of play.

The tentative plan aims to kick off the league for the Lower Mainland Clubs on the March 6-7 weekend and with both Thompson Okanagan FC and Vancouver Island Wave joining the competition outlet on April 17-18. However this can only take place if it falls within the current Provincial Health Orders in place at that time. While the League has built out a possible 13 weekends of scheduled play in the spring period, the League will eliminate the front loaded weekends one by one if it is clear that these games can’t be played within 2 weeks of those dates, noting the PHO in place at that time. The Provincial Premier Cup has yet to be confirmed if it will go ahead for 2021, but if it is achievable the tentative plan is for the Premier Cup to take place by the second week of June.

The league and its clubs fully support the PHO and all are actively supportive of a return to play for our youth as soon as and as responsibly possible.

BCSPL ‘Phase 1’ Season – cancelled

The BC Soccer Premier League wishes to provide an update regarding the status of its phase 1 season, which was originally scheduled to take place from late February through mid June.

We recognize that during the ongoing suspension of soccer activity, many clubs have been in a holding pattern relating to returning to some form of BCSPL play this summer. Following BC Soccer’s most recent news release, it is clear that we won’t have the available time to continue and complete any version of phase 1 of play. Therefore, we have made the decision to cancel the phase 1 season of play, effective immediately.

We trust this memo will let you now fully focus on the ‘return to play’ plans that have been released by BC Soccer, and we will work with you, BC Soccer, and the BCSPL Committee to formulate a plan for BCSPL play in the fall.

BCSPL University Showcase – cancelled

With the current health situation in BC, and taking the lead from BC Soccer and the Provincial Health Office, the BC Soccer Premier League has taken the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 BCSPL University Showcase.

While we don’t know when we can kick a ball again, the Provincial Health Officer has put in place a directive to not hold events/gatherings with more than 50 people. As per that release, this order is currently in place until May 30, 2020, which falls after the Showcase was actually planned for.

We could have waited and hoped this order would be lifted or adjusted, and that things would perhaps drastically improve. But we have 44 teams with planned travel arrangements into Kamloops, and with the current travel advisories in place, and upcoming deadlines for releasing hotel room blocks, all of these travel factors had to go into making this difficult decision.

With the very limited calendar options to schedule an event such as this in the first place, the event will not be rescheduled for 2020, and we will return with a spring 2021 University Showcase event.

We hope that soccer can resume, but right now we need to look out for the greater health of all citizens, and hope that this decision helps provide some clarity around team travel in the coming weeks and months.
